Using so much Range Rover hardware, the main priority for Project Jay's designers was to make it look as different as possible from its plusher and more expensive brother.

This objective was achieved with considerable aplomb, especially in the IAD and Terence Conran designed interior...


Exterior models


Differing rear-end treatments tried out - this is no split tailgate...


The round headlamps were a late removal...


In outdoor lighting, the full-scale prototype was convincing...


But what have we here? A five-door. The more versatile Discovery was planned from the beginning...


Rear view reveals subtle tweaks were still to be made before production...

Early 1989 and the Discovery is nearing completion, including eye-catching side graphics and rectangular headlamps.
