Jaguar became part of the great combine when it was acquired by BMC in 1966. Between that time and its eventual sale into the private sector in 1986, its management team retained a far greater degree of autonomy within BL than any of the other car divisions. Sadly, that did little to protect its reputation during the dark years of the late 1970s, but less than a decade later, Jaguar had been transformed into a very desirable asset.
