Taking over from the extremely successful R8, this version of the 400 had a lot to live up to. However, it's styling was far less happy than Rover's last new car, the 600, and this undoubtedly affected sales.

Rover's 400 gave way to the 45 in 1999. This facelift effectively aligned the car's styling with the recently-launched 75.
