Developed on a strictly limited budget in an attempt to compete with the market-leading Ford Transit, the Sherpa eventually overcame a decidedly shaky start and went on to prove that it had real staying power – just like its namesake. Indeed, it remains in production today in the updated form of the LDV Pilot.


The development story

The Sherpa was cobbled together from parts of its predecessor, the J4, and many other Leyland models.
